Open vStorage is the only storage solution that can offer distributed block storage across multiple datacenters. This GeoScale functionality doesn’t rely on replication but uses a unique NC-ECC (Network Connected-Error Correction Code) which uses only 1.3x the amount of storage and is 10 times more safer. This NC-ECC algorithm can be compared with solving a Sudoku puzzle. The data gets chopped up in chunks which are distributed across all the nodes and datacenters in the cluster. As long as you have enough chunks (disk, nodes or data centers) left, you can always recover the data.

Can I survive a Datacenter Outage?

Yes you can. In a GeoScale cluster, the data is spread over multiple datacenters and is available from any location. If one of the datacenters would go offline, the GeoScale cluster stays up and running and continues to serve data. Virtual Machines running in the datacenter that went down can be migrated to one of the other datacenters in just seconds without having to copy all of  the data.

Will storing data across multiple datacenters not be too slow for my database, VMs, … ?

No, Open vStorage aggregates all flash (SSDs, NVMe, PCIe) within each datacenter to initiate a global cache. To speed up reads Open vStorage will use these local cache pools to speed up incoming reads and writes.

How far can the datacenters be apart?

Open vStorage supports both MetroScale and GeoScale clusters. In a MetroScale cluster, datacenters are typically a few miles away from each other. In GeoScale clusters however, datacenters can be thousands of miles away from each other. Open vStorage offers the technology to create high performing and available clusters in any setup.

What type of connection is required between the datacenters?

Open vStorage can work across normal internet connections but to ensure performance a level 2 or 3 network is required. The higher quality the network links are between the datacenters, the more consistent performance will be.
