What does object storage economics mean?
Object storage has driven the cost of storing file down significantly by using off-the shelf hardware and by allowing to control costs with pay-as-you-go model. Open vStorage takes the same approach but for block storage.
Does Open vStorage require special hardware or network equipment?
No, Open vStorage is a software only solution that can be installed on any traditional X86 server. Also on the networking side no special hardware must be purchased as you can leverage the existing TCP-IP network.
Can I start small and grow?
Open vStorage can grow from 3 nodes with space for only a couple of TB upto a multi datacenter storage cluster which can store 30PB of data.The good part is that scaling an Open vStorage cluster is seamlessly and with steps as small as a single disk, SSD or host.
What about IT silos?
Open vStorage removes the IT silos as created by traditional storage products. Within a single cluster you can serve the highest demanding applications, build a large file repository or digest incoming data from millions of IoT devices. Open vStorage allows to differentiate between these use cases by assigning a storage profile, a Presets, to them. Presets define how data is written to the backend and whether data is compressed or encrypted. They can be used to define a policy around availability, performance and security of the data stored on a the Backend.
